Putting the Cost of Prosthetic Devices into Perspective

August 31, 2016

How much does a prosthetic leg cost?

Although the price of prosthetic limbs reflects their technological innovation, it is difficult to comprehend that amputees are forced to consider paying this much for a device that offers them mobility.

Emery recently found three bill estimates for legs that she'd been offered. We've turned that information into these graphs because the cost of these devices is often nearly impossible to find, and is truly surprising.

Here an accurate depiction of the cost of the 3 major prosthetic knees and their componentry.

Conclusion:

A prosthetic leg is comparable to the average yearly income of a Canadian.

It costs far more than 4 years of University.

It is more expensive than a Luxury Car.

Imagine going to look for a prosthetic and having this be your bill. Knowing that to be able to function to a comfortable degree of mobility you would have to pay tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket because there is so little government support. Not to mention that this assistive device must be replaced every 3 to 7 years.
